What I like to do is get a hitch mounted to the rear with a long hitch bar and ball that gives enough distance for someone to realize they did hit it. Plus that hitch bar and ball can take some abuse... just look at it. Any damage wouldn't bother you.

doing that would have saved me a couple thousand dollars in bills to my local body shop.

That's what my brother added to his SUV. Never towed a thing with it, but it's there in case someone gently rear ends him. Nothing is going to help if they come at your rear at full speed.

Even better if it's a hidden hitch always hated when the hitch was mostly exposed and looked too obvious. I think now some trucks come with hitch systems.
